New Year, New Horsemanship, New Dreams
Welcome to The University of Horsemanship - the website created to share Horsemanship ideas, Plans, Goals and Dreams!
I'd like you to think of this New Year as a starting point of creating a New Horsemanhip and having New Dreams! I'm here to help you make your Dreams into Goals and through your Goals, find Success! AND as always, we'll make sure to have lots of fun doing it!
A useful way of making goals more powerful is to use the SMART mnemonic. While there are plenty of variants (some of which we've included in parenthesis), SMART usually stands for:
S – Specific (or Significant).
M – Measurable (or Meaningful).
A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented).
R – Relevant (or Rewarding).
T – Time-bound (or Trackable).
So let's walk through setting a goal using the SMART system -
"I want to lose weight"
I want to lose 5 pounds"
"I want to lose 5 pounds by March 31st."
"I want to lose 5 pounds by March 31st, by eating right and exercising"
"I want to lose 5 pounds by March 31st, by eating 1500 calories a day and exercising 1/2 hour on the elliptical machine every day."
"I want to lose 5 pounds by March 31st, by eating 1500 calories and exercising 1/2 hour on the elliptical machine every day. I will purchase and prepare veggies and lean meats for my meals. I will place my workout clothes next to the bed so I can put them on first thing, and exercise every day after I finish my morning coffee."
Is my final goal.....
Specific? Yes, amount and date
Measurable? Yes, I use the scale every morning
Attainable? Yes, the amount is reasonable and healthy
Relevant and Rewarding? Yes, it will help me look and feel better
Time Bound? Yep, 30 days to do it
